It is responsible for maintaining many connections open at the same time and responding to hundreds of requests simultaneously.

A server is capable of performing multiple tasks at the same time and needs to maintain multiple connections at the same time, whereas a workstation only needs to perform the application-specific task and can also be used as a stand-alone device. A server is required to hold multiple connections at the same time.
