Oracle vs Teradata

Oracle and Teradata ORACLE is concentrated on the " data warehouse" side of the data warehouse, Teradata on the " data warehouse management" side. While both sides of the business are very important, strong data warehouse management skills are particularly needed in this technology sector, where large numbers of companies are nearby competitors. Many Teradata consultants and Teradata customers opt for Oracle first, due to the perceived reliability of the Oracle technology stack. However, Oracle and Teradata are not exclusive techniques. There are extensive synergies between the two.

Oracle emerged victorious in its Java-related legal battle against former OpenSolaris co-founder and TERADATA co-founder Mark Shapiro, winning out in the end, and ending of Shapiro’s more than 20-year debate with Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. This is the first time the two have settled a patent lawsuit after the expiration of their 2009 settlement agreement.

Oracle has dominated the database industry. Teradata has dominated the data warehouse market. While the companies are often lumped together as “NoSQL” databases, they have very different approaches and use very different technologies. Oracle has been dominant for a decade of dominating the database business with its flagship database, MySQL, which competes with Oracle’s flagship database, Oracle Exadata.

Seen as exclusive, they have worked in the past to come together on various projects. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Teradata CEO Mark Hurd once sat together at the same table while the two companies were trying to work together on a storage alliance. The idea never came to fruition, but it did show the two companies learned from each other and were respectful of each other. Oracle and Teradata have worked together before on other projects, such as a multi- platform video editing solution and a video storage system.

Oracle and Teradata are similar in many respects but are also unique in their differences. Oracle products tend to be complex and difficult to install and use, whereas Teradata products are simple to install and use, but come at a higher price.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages and depending on where you use them they may or may not be a good fit for your organization. In this an article we’ll explore the advantages and disadvantages of the two systems, and show how you can use Oracle Teradata as the primary enterprise data warehouse.

Oracle and Teradata can be used together to provide high availability, greater scale, and improved performance. When used together, the two systems complement each other. Oracle benefits from Teradata’s shared Oracle installation and data platform, while Teradata benefits from Oracle’s database security and other features.
