AMD’s top-performing chips are its Zen and Ryzen CPUs, though Intel’s chips are available on the same platform and have better gaming benchmarks, which draws a clear distinction. Ryzen upstarts show up as close competitors to Intel and, in some cases, outperform it. AMD has a 4.5% share of the desktop CPU market, thanks largely to its Ryzen and Threadripper processors. But that’s not where AMD’s focus is.

If we think of AMD and Intel as making products that sell under a brand, then the brand name provides a clear description of the product and sets expectations for the product in the mind of the consumer.

To summarise, AMD’s and Intel’s leading-edge processors are not more powerful than their competitors’ offerings, but they are more efficient, leading to better performance for the same amount of computing power used.

Intel Xeon processors, whether 2- or 4-core, are faster than an AMD processor of similar clock speed and larger cache. However, they are also more expensive to purchase. Finally, a comparison of the 2 shows that Intel processors use less power and have better multi-threading performance for a given TDP.
